From gas-elec to aqua-lec - a new plumbing franchise with a difference
A new franchise is launched by gas-elec Safety Systems at this year's British & International Franchise Exhibition. From the company that successfully pioneered combined inspections for gas and electrical safety testing comes aqua-lec, a new plumbing franchise that features plumbing with a real difference.
Celebrity builder and property renovator Tommy Walsh will officially be launching the new franchise on Stand E30 at the exhibition at 12 noon on April 1st.
The aqua-lec franchise provides the opportunity for suitably qualified men and women to take advantage of the gap caused by a national shortage of 29,000 plumbers which, says the company, has created a pent-up need in the housing market. A recent gas-elec survey found that 17% of the properties managed by their clients in the lettings market have water-related problems in any one year. Translated into the domestic market, that means that three and a half million homes will need a plumber.
"One of the plus factors of aqua-lec," says managing director John Davidson, is that we can provide a proactive rather than a reactive plumbing service by working with our existing UK network of gas-elec franchisees who are already doing some 80,000 safety inspections in UK homes every year. We don't want to be, nor need to be, a reactive 24/7 emergency service because, if you're investing in a business, who wants to be called out at midnight on a Saturday? An aqua-lec plumber can be called in before you have a damaging problem, not necessarily afterwards.
We already know through our gas-elec clients that many would like us to take our service beyond combined inspections. The aqua-lec concept is designed to provide a One-Stop remedial, repair and installation facility within the combined networks. Other pluses are that the aqua-lec franchisee will be able to do home health checks and energy ratings and, depending on their skills set, electrical works and other related services. aqua-lec is more than just plumbing, it's far more broadly based and that's what makes us different.
First class training of up to 12 weeks in the company's own City & Guilds and CITB approved training centre gives franchisees a nationally recognised City & Guilds plumbing qualification en route to an NVQ2. Potential franchisees will be from a craft trades or multi-skilled background, or be people with transferable skills. Experienced DIY-ers may also be suitable, but would need to pass an assessment of their skills in the company's award-winning training facilities.
Giving the thumbs-up to those facilities, Tommy Walsh emphasises the importance of good training to would-be franchisees. It is very important that plumbers are trained well, you can't lower the standards. The quality of the work is all-important, which comes back to the quality of the training. I have visited the aqua-lec training centre and it has all the essentials, everything needed to train people is there. aqua-lec is plugging a big hole, and I can see it working very well.
The total investment required for an aqua-lec franchise is £22,350 including a franchise fee of £14,000. For more details call 0800 587 0666 or visit www.aqua-lec.com
